H.M.T. Powell was born in Illinois in 1824. A townscape and landscape painter, Powell went West with a wagon train from Illinois,
arriving in San Diego in December 1849; while there he attemped to open an art school and did drawings of the missions at
San Diego and San Luis Rey; he was also a portrait painter and did some of the earliest known views of Los Angeles; after
a few weeks, he traveled to northern California and was active in Yuba County until 1860; he wrote and illustrated his day-by-day
diary, Santa Fe Trail to California, published in 1931, about his travels from east to west beginning April 3, 1849 and ending
March 24, 1852.
